Other Services

Most of these services are available when you create your CS account. Many others are available by request through the Systems group.

Wireless Network Access [more info]

The Computer Science Department at Florida State University is pleased to announce the availability of Wireless Network Service to our students. Using the latest in wireless network technology, IEEE 802.11b coverage is available in most classrooms where Computer Science classes are taught.

Members of the Computer Science community who have a laptop, PDA, or other 802.11b compatible device will be able to connect to the Internet in most classrooms and communal areas around the Love and Carothers building. The programs intent is to bring Internet connectivity to the classroom, giving students the ability to use a classes digital content at their own desk.

Web Services [more info]

Two WWW servers are provided for use by the Computer Science community. Www.cs.fsu.edu is provided for faculty use, and Ww2.cs.fsu.edu is available for student use. Ww2 is available to all students in the Computer Science community. Both servers use Apache and feature CGI support.

MSDN Academic Alliance [more info]

The Microsoft Developer Network Academic Alliance (MSDNAA) is a special program designed with the intention of providing academic institutions, faculty, and students with the latest development tools at a low annual cost. The Computer Science Department at FSU has joined the MSDN Academic Alliance and, as a result, there are a number of resources now available to both students and faculty. These resources include free downloads/licenses of the software available to all Computer Science majors and grads taking credit courses within the department.

Database Services

A database server running MySQL on Linux is available for research use by professors and graduate students, and for classes which require SQL services. Please contact the System Group via the Helpdesk to setup Database services.

And finally, if you ever have a problem with these or one of the other computing services provided by the Systems Group, the last part of the tutorial will tell you what you need to do.
